Question:

Craig,

I’m so confused. I’m trying to lose weight, and I’ve heard so many things about counting calories. I want to do what it takes to lose weight, but how do I know how many calories I should be eating?

Craig’s Answer:

First of all let’s get one thing straight: a calorie is not a calorie is not a calorie. If only the human body, the most complex machine to exist on this planet, were as simple as “calories in, calories out.” And let’s face it, if that worked, then we would have a country of skinny people! Don’t agree? Well then, where are all of the fruits of labor from the over $40 Billion (US Government statistic) spent by Americans every year in the weight loss industry? As Dr. Mark Hyman, author of Ultra-Metabolism, so plainly puts it, 1000 calories of sugar produces completely different physiologic responses in the body than 1000 calories of protein, fat, and fiber! What he is referring to is that the hormonal implications of food are far more important to optimal health and weight maintenance than its energetic component (a “calorie”). Now I am certainly not recommending that people can eat a Michael Phelps diet. But when you are able to maintain a healthy mental/emotional state and a diet of high quality plant and animal foods you will not overeat for your body’s needs. Thus you will not be challenged by weight (the main reason that I find people asking this question are concerned with).

So the ultimate question is why do people eat more than their bodies need? It’s very simple. Their bodies are starving for nutrition (nutrients – vitamins, minerals, trace minerals, enzymes, fat, protein, or water). Overweight and obese people are often the most nutrient-depleted or dehydrated people on the planet. Their body continually craves food because it is in a desperate search for nutritional satisfaction. If you select high quality foods you will receive massive doses of all your vital nutrients. Don’t concern yourself with trying to figure out which specific nutrients you are lacking and then supplement with low-quality vitamin products. You will never truly know since your body is constantly changing and those products have nothing to do with real food. Instead, eat a wide variety of high-quality organic plant and animal foods, supplement with NutriHarmony Real Food Supplements, and you will surely get what you need.

For a practical strategy to incorporate high quality foods into your life, schedule an appointment with one of our nutrition-based health coaches.

Here’s our newest section where YOU get to ask The Movement co-founder, Craig Keaton, your health questions! If you have any questions you’d like to Ask Craig then please email us at questions@themovementdallas.com and stay tuned.

Question:

Craig,

I’m a parent of 3 kids and have a question about milk. I know The Movement frowns upon pasteurized milk, but I don’t know what to give my kids so they get their calcium. Do you have any suggestions?

Pam, Mom in Dallas

Craig’s Answer:

Whenever I hear this question, I think how successful marketing campaigns really can be. “Got Milk?” The first thing to remember is that milk is by no means the only source of calcium on this planet. In fact, I find it laughable that so many pediatricians inquisitive of a child’s diet only ask, “Are they drinking milk? Well if not, do they eat yogurt?” What about the rest of their diet? Let’s not ask about the 3 cans of soda the average American kid has in a day. Or the fact that kids are consuming their body weight in sugar and food additives every year. Or what the over 2 BILLION pounds of pesticides, herbicides, and fungicides in our conventional food are doing to their growing bodies. If pasteurized milk “does a body so good,” then why do Americans have the second highest rate of Osteoporosis? And don’t say it’s because of not enough milk, because we Americans also consume the second highest amount of pasteurized milk in the world! Lack of pasteurized dairy is NOT our problem!

Let’s start with this. Here is a video where one of our trainers, Brian Johnson, answers the question, “Is Raw Milk Safe?” and explains its many benefits. If you are still not comfortable with raw milk, fine! Let’s give your children vegetables, especially greens and green leafy veggies for starters. Also give them healthy protein sources that have not been over-cooked – meats such as grass-fed beef, pastured chicken and eggs, and only wild-caught fish.

Next, let’s talk about elimination of a few things. This is the area that would probably make the biggest difference in your and your children’s health. No sodas and no sports drinks. Get rid of all products containing High Fructose Corn Syrup. Seriously limit if not completely eliminate candy and other sugary treats. Also significantly reduce consumption of fruit juice. Store-bought juice is just sugar water, even the no-sugar added stuff! Lastly be careful about what you feed them from a bag or a box. Read the labels on these foods. If there is even one ingredient that you can’t pronounce or don’t know what it is DO NOT feed it to your child!

Final note – Parents, I find that so many of us struggle because we don’t practice healthy behaviors ourselves. Please be a daily model for these practices, and I am sure your children will be really excited to live like their heroes!

Saturday mornings are a wonderful time of energy at the studio, as individuals and families arrive to pick up their farm-fresh goodies: produce, raw dairy, and pastured meats. Everyone wants to replenish their freezer with their favorite items, like the fresh milk from Full Quiver, the country-style chicken sausage from Windy Meadows Family Farm, or lean beef from Burgundy Pasture Beef. Folks also come to replenish their NutriHarmony supplements, and we can barely keep Enfusia in stock! We leave the studio Saturday afternoons feeling so thankful that we get to play a role in helping people in Dallas become healthier while supporting local farm families.

We’ve been getting tons of wonderful zucchini in our produce co-op share lately. Here’s a great way to use it!

Christine’s Breakfast (or Anytime!) Frittata

2-3 small sweet peppers from the co-op, slicked into thin strips
1-2 organic zucchini squash from the co-op, diced
1/2 yellow onion, diced
5 or 6 eggs from Full Quiver Farm
Black pepper & sea salt
Coconut oil
Coconut milk

Whisk eggs with a few tablespoons of coconut milk until they’re nice and creamy. Heat the pan on medium and add enough coconut oil to coat the pan. Add the onions and zucchini and sautée for several minutes until they are translucent. Add peppers and toss in the pan. Next, add the egg/coconut milk mixture to the pan so it covers the vegetables and the entire base of the pan. Sprinkle the egg mixture with salt, pepper, and fresh basil if desired. Cook on medium for a few minutes until the edges begin to set. Then turn down to low, and cover the pain for a few minutes to let the mixture completely set. Check it after about 5 minutes, because every oven is different. It should be set in the middle but still really moist.

Remove from pan and cut in slices and serve!

Summer is on the way, and – let’s be honest – it already feels like summer in Dallas! Here are our Top 5 Refreshing Beverages for you and your family to enjoy this summer season!

Iced Enfusia. We all love a hot, steaming cup of Enfusia, but have you tried it ICED? Mmmmm. Just brew it as usual in your coffeepot or French press. Then pour it over ice, and add a slew of fresh lemon, orange, and lime slices. Sweeten with agave, honey, or stevia, and you have one refreshing summer beverage!

Kombucha. This is an organic raw fermented tea. It might sound a little crazy, but it’s delicious, with a taste like sparkling fruit juice. Our favorite brands of kombucha are GT’s Synergy and High Country, both of which you can get at your local Whole Foods, and even Newflower Farmer’s Market. Why is it so great? With flavors like Guava, Ginger, and Mango, it also contains billions of probiotic flora, which are extremely beneficial for your immune and digestive systems.

Lime Spritzer. We don’t miss the yucky stuff in soft drinks, but we DO sometimes miss the fizz. But that’s easy to fix! Just get some sparkling mineral water and squeeze some fresh lime and lemon juice into it, and add a few cubes of ice. It’ll satisfy your desire for the fizz of soft drinks, without all the high-fructose corn syrup or artificial flavors!

Carrot-Apple-Ginger Juice. If you have access to a juicer, this is a great refreshing drink. Run several carrots, apples with the skin, and about a 1-inch piece of peeled fresh ginger root through your juicer. The juice should be a bright orange color and a little frothy at the top. Delicious! Sara Snow’s website has another great juicing recipe. If you’re interested in a juice fast, check out this previous post.

Homemade Lemonade. What is summer without fresh lemonade? All you need is agave or honey, water, and fresh lemons. You can even add some crushed mint leaves or fresh ginger for a little zing. Check out the lemonade recipes on this site…but for the “green tea” variation, use Enfusia!

“Our body is a machine for living. It is organized for that, it is its nature.” – Leo Tolstoy

Everyday each person is bombarded with thousands of advertisements that talk about losing weight and looking great. To date there are over 4,000 diet books and the U.S. alone spends $30 billion on diet and weight loss. Yet we are more obese and worse than ever before. Something is clearly wrong.

The Movement takes a honest and simple approach to being healthy and our focus on Nutrition & Lifestyle comes down to 2 core principles. Real Food and Real Living.

REAL FOOD

We have humbled ourselves to know that God figured it out when he made the carrot, the avocado, and healthy animals. These are real foods. We live in a day and age where we can’t pronounce the ingredients in what we eat and we consume packaged and processed foods containing thousands of toxins. This is precisely why we have problems ranging from the most common health concerns to chronic disease.

Learn about what Real Foods are and how they will radically change your life.

REAL LIVING

Our world is saturated with an on the go mentality. Going without sleep, living a stressful life, and eating in the car has become the norm. At the Movement we believe in a naturally balanced lifestyle full of vitality. It is important that every person knows their core values, finds time to rest, and enjoys the life they live.

Learn about Real Living and the keys to a balanced life.
