"Healthy" Is Always Relative…

June 30, 2011
I remember the first time i did a cleanse
Wow! was that an experience.
I was doing a colon cleanse
and in the process was going gluten and grain free
as well as following an anti-fungal protocol.
How’s that for a “health booster”?!?

I have never felt so bad in all my life
But it had to be good for me. I was cleansing!
I was ridding my body of fungus
and Damn It I was Gluten Free!
I was doing everything that all the smart people said to do!

Headache, body ache, muscle and joint pain,
fatigue, nausea, diarrhea
I could keep going with the myriad of symptoms that i experienced and have experienced
with all of the different cleanses, detoxes, elimination, rotation
and just plain crazy dietary things i have done

Well that cleanse, antifungal, elimination diet ended just like many more for me in the future
It also ended like most people’s diet attempts and exercise endeavors
It ended about as soon as it began
and left me eating worse than ever before
and feeling like a total loser

I completely believed that there could not be anything wrong with the cleanse and diet protocols
After all,  the experts would say “you’re gonna feel worse before you feel better”
some might even exclaim that “feeling worse was good. it meant that you really needed this”

All the problems must rest with me. I was a failure and a failure repeatedly!
What in the world could be so wrong with me that i cannot even stick to a stupid diet
And what it sounded like in my head (expletives removed for the family readers)
“It’s just food, loser. It’s just a little discomfort. Push through the pain!”
“You can’t even go a few days or even hours following this? You suck!”

WOW! That’s a great outcome!
Feeling worse and acting worse than ever before
I must be seriously and fundamentally flawed

And then after a few YEARS of failed attempts
with these particular edible escapades
I realized something VERY IMPORTANT

“ALL SENSATIONS ARE ACTION SIGNALS” -Lou McGovern

Let’s recall my initial symptoms
(Headache, body ache, muscle and joint pain, fatigue, nausea, diarrhea)

In any other context any of these symptoms would not be advised, welcomed, or wanted
No one in their right mind seeks these symptoms and sensations
What are these “experts” thinking?
And why did i wait so long to remember
that these or any other painful symptoms and sensations
means that i am not going in the right direction

“IT AIN’T WHAT YOU DON’T KNOW THAT GETS YOU INTO TROUBLE
IT’S WHAT YOU KNOW FOR SURE THAT JUST AIN’T SO.” -
Mark Twain

Have you ever eaten ANYTHING that you knew to be “good for the body” or “healthy”
or that you were told was “the healthiest thing you can eat”
and yet not feel good after eating?

Anything, even what you believe to be “good” and “healthy”, can be bad.

Have you ever exercised and it been bad for you
or made you feel worse
or worse yet it Hurt you?
Do you know anyone that has had the same experience?

Anything, even what you believe to be “good” and “healthy”, can be bad.

Healthy is independent and individual.
Healthy is always relative.

A single molecule of coconut oil can be too much for one and not enough for another
A particular vegetable maybe necessary for you today but disastrous tomorrow
You ever eat something “so healthy” and spend the rest of the day on the toilet?
I have.

In exercise,
What is corrective for one
may be catastrophic for another
You ever see someone hurt themselves on the first rep?
I have.

It’s fair to say that there A LOT of things we BELIEVE that SHOULD be good for us
and it just ain’t so

THEORETICAL AND ACTUAL ARE OFTEN NOT THE SAME

The point is there are a million theoretical “better” exercises and programs
There are a million theoretical “better” diets or lifestyle choices
But it’s all conjecture until the results are in

If you exercise and hurt and dislike it and don’t exercise again
your exercise program was not better

If you change what you eat,
and don’t see results, don’t feel better, don’t like it, or anything about it just pisses you off
your dietary change was not better

BETTER IS NOT AN ACTION. IT’S AN OUTCOME!

Follow you
not your Guru

Remember
If something doesn’t work for you
you’re not broken
the application is

The term “healthy” is not applicable in isolation

cheers
